Can you feel Spring slowly starting to settle in!

Although we now have to contend with the August winds the weather definitely seems to be starting to warm up and we’re looking forward to night bowls starting up again. Speaking of which, our Midlands Hillbillies held a fun evening competition on Wednesday, the 23rd of August with a game of 4-3-2-1. After lots of laughter on the greens there was more to follow around the braai as we enjoyed a bring and share dinner. Well done to Mark Taylor and Kevin Palmer who each took home first prize on their respective rinks, and also to Lisa Nagel who won the toucher prize.

On Friday, the 25th of August we had 18 teams playing in our Dormehl Phalane Property Group 2 Bowl Trips. It was possibly one of the windiest days we’ve had and not only were some hats being blown away on the green, but so too were the bowls! Despite the weather conditions, everyone had a fantastic time and a number of the bowlers seemed to really enjoy the challenge presented by the winds! Thank you to Pippa Griffin from Dormehl Phalane Property Group for their generous prize sponsorship and the lovely teatime treats!

Back to some happier news… we’ve got a new competition in the pipelines which will be sponsored by Amber Glades Senior Living. At this point we’re in the early planning stages but will have a date set for a morning competition in either September or October. This one is set to be in interesting and fun one with a possible minimum age requirement for some of the players. Keep an eye out for more information on that in the coming weeks.

One of the ways that we reward responsible dog ownership and to help dogs enjoy a better quality of life, is by installing a fenced off area so that dogs no longer need to be chained. Most people living in townships cannot afford to fence their properties and resort to chaining their dogs, at least sometimes, to keep them safe and to avoid them annoying the neighbours.

Ntuthuko and Nondumiso Nxumalo have been attending our dog school for some time now and both have reached the senior class with their dogs, Fluffy and Spike. Our Animal Welfare Officer identified this family as deserving recipients of the fencing project as they have shown commitment to the program and have cared well for their dogs. They were very happy that their dogs can now be safe and move freely at home.

Here Are Renée’s Top Tips To Embrace Your Natural Texture

Don’t Over Wash Your Hair
It seems simple but how many times a week you wash your hair has an impact on the health of your hair. It all depends on what you do daily. Activities such as exercise, going to the beach or environmental factors like a windy dusty day and smoke-filled rooms take their toll. If you use a gentle shampoo that is sensitive to the scalp’s pH level you should be able to wash your hair as often as needed. Just remember less is more no matter what hair type, and rinsing then nourishing your hair can be as effective as using shampoo.

Take Care of Your Scalp
It’s the scalp that determines the level of oil excreted onto your hair and therefore how often you need to wash it. Dryer and coarser hair types absorb this oil much better than finer hair types resulting in those with fine hair needing to rinse it more regularly. The natural oils produced by your scalp are the best food for your hair and over-washing especially with the wrong shampoo wreaks havoc with the pH.

Be Selective With Your Products
All hair needs nourishment and cleansing to remove the impurities we are unavoidably exposed to. These include chlorine and heavy metals from our water, medications and chemical treatments like tinting or foiling and build up from styling products to name but a few. The overuse of products causes build-up that results in real nourishment being blocked from penetrating the hair and scalp. This derails the natural processes of your body totally and can result in hair drying out or being weighed down.
The products that are offered on the shelves of your favourite shop have marketing teams behind them so be selective of what is good for your hair and what is wordplay. Checking that products are sulphate, alcohol and paraben-free is a good place to start.

Use Natural Nourishing Treatments
Natural products that tend to be plant-based are less likely to cause build-up because they don’t use petrochemicals. Petrochemicals are a waste product of the petroleum industry and have no place in a gentle personal care product or routine. Oils are fantastic for hair if they are of good quality, but it is important that they are cleaned off correctly or they will leave the hair oily and heavy. Additionally, a good nourishing hair mask will go a long way if left on for a while. Beware of “Green Washing” by advertisers as this can take you off course; I have seen some ‘natural’ products produce worse build-up on hair because the company producing them didn't understand hair.

Be Gentle With Interventions
When you do hard styling - braids, cornrows, or mechanically changing texture with blowouts and straighteners - you put a huge amount of strain on your hair. In ethnic women who have used these methods for many years, I often see the hairline recede totally from having the follicle pulled out by many weighty weaves. The same goes for caucasian women who add heavy extensions, the weight of which pulls their natural hair out or breaks due to the load. Even worse bonded or glued extensions don’t like oils in products which usually eliminates more natural options. If you walk away from a salon visit and your hair feels dryer, more fragile or your scalp hurts you need to re-evaluate your hair treatments.

Use Accessories as an Alternative
Clip-in braids and extensions are the best alternatives for a little change without putting the hair under strain. Using wigs and wraps is a great way to get some variety in your look without lengthy salon visits and or chemical exposure. And of course, silk scarves and hats have always provided a great way to add to your look without causing any damage. 2021 Fashion weeks all over the globe are testifying how exquisite the addition of beads, hair wraps, braids, and slides can be.
Be careful, wigs that are worn too long don’t allow the scalp to breathe so remember to give your scalp a break in the evenings, especially if you wear your wig daily.
Even though some may not be ready to walk away from a styled approach altogether, getting into a gentle regime by reacquainting yourself with your natural texture is a start to embracing your individuality.
Each head of hair is unique and if we are to truly accept ourselves and take our self-care to a more authentic place, we need to be educated on how to work with the texture and not against it.

'Our 1st Girls Basketball team have enjoyed competing in the biggest U18 All Girls Basketball Tournament in Southern Africa, the Val Fowler Basketball Tournament at Pietermaritzburg Girl's High School. 32 teams from all across Southern Africa competed for the championship, over 4 days, at 2 venues.

Having lost their fixture against The Hot Shots in their final pool game of the tournament last night, the team faced St John's DSG 1 in the playoff for 13th and 14th place this morning. St John's won the fixture 16-12, placing Howick in 14th position.

We commend our team for the energy and committment they brought to every match.

'Our Winter Dinner on Tuesday 15 August broached a more serious topic than usual, with 'Comparison Destroys'.

Grade 10 learners, Abigail Weber, Madison Guy and Mia van den Essenburg confidently handled their first speech presentations.

Banele Mpangase and Abigail Holmes reminded us that negative comparison often prevents us from celebrating others and their achievements. A welcome moment of comic relief was introduced by Kierra Luyt in her imaginative tale of sibling rivalry. Neave Cox modelled the accomplished orator’s poise, thorough preparation, authentic voice, and immediate rapport with her audience. She achieved the winning presentation of the evening. Brandon Maposa gave a mature, resonating response to the speeches with his thoughtful explanation of the negative effects of schadenfreude – joy in others’ failings.

The Sound of Drowning, a compelling, insightful, and gently inspiring short documentary about women and their journey from addiction to recovery, directed by Durban filmmaker, Tami Jacobs is available to view free online on YouTube during Women’s Month.

The film is a quiet homage to the brave journey of eight women from the ages of 19 to 69 years -mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts - from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, who have found and are living in recovery from active addiction. By amplifying the voices of these resilient women who triumphed over challenges around addiction whether it be alcohol, street drugs, or psychiatric medications, the filmmakers hope to encourage women to step forward and seek help if needed.

Produced by Jacobs and Anél Sherren, an Addictions Counsellor, who also features in the film, The Sound of Drowning offers insights into the transformative power of unity through community that is found within the recovery process and sheds some light on what it takes to get better and what happened to them when they eventually reached out for help.

Jacobs, who is herself an addict in recovery explains what inspired her to create the film: “I lived in active addiction for 15 years before finding recovery and I know from my personal experience that it’s an extremely painful place to be.”

“I was constantly depressed and suicide was a constant risk for me. When I found recovery, together with my sponsor and co-producer Anél, we noticed that the number of women who seek treatment and also manage to stay in recovery is drastically less than the number of men. Anel has a lot of insight into the disease of addiction and we decided that together, we could do something about it. We first wanted to find out why women don’t seek help and next, we wanted to send out a message of hope to any women suffering from the disease of addiction, that there is help available, and there are many people that can support them.”

“The purpose of the documentary was to lift the lid off the stigma women face when attempting to get help for their addiction,” says co-producer Anél Sherren. “There is such disproportion between the number of men and women coming in for help -we wanted to break this view so that women could feel safe asking for help and entering into treatment. We hope that this gentle message from these incredible women in this film will help motivate women to step forward.”

One more week closer to spring and another bowling week finished!

We hosted our monthly Greendale Spar Drawn Trips/Pairs on Saturday, the 12th of August. What a lovely turnout on a beautifully warm afternoon. Well done to all who took part and congratulations to the winning teams:-

Over the weekend Lisa Nagel & Wendy Smith took part in the KZN Pairs competition where they played against 5 teams over two days. The teams they came up against were from Maritzburg, Collegians, Umhlali, Dundee & Westville Bowling Clubs and gave them some tough competition. With 5 games of 18 ends over the two days, our ladies delivered a total of 285 bowls! Two hundred and eighty-five!!!! That’s A LOT of bowls. Whilst they only won one of their games they showed some real skill on the greens and made us very proud. Despite the stiff muscles they’re both looking forward to trying again next year!

Long-time friends, collaborators and leading exponents of the acoustic guitar scene in South Africa, Derek Gripper and Guy Buttery are coming to the KZN Midlands for a one off concert. After their last concert together at the legendary Freight & Salvage in San Francisco, California, this will be their first official performance together as a duo in KwaZulu-Natal.

Derek Gripper is known for his groundbreaking technique for evoking the West African kora on the guitar. He has transcribed the complex music of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and infuses his interpretations of Bach’s music with lessons from the oral traditions of Africa. He has performed with Toumani Diabaté’s Symmetric Orchestra and classical guitar legend John Williams, and tours worldwide.It took Derek Gripper untold hours of painstaking work to transcribe note-for-note the complex compositions of Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and find a way of playing them on six-string guitar. The results appeared on his ninth album, “One Night on Earth”. The album created an unprecedented meeting point between the written tradition of Western classical music and the oral tradition of the West African griots.

“Guy Buttery is something of a National treasure”, says South Africa’s leading newspaper The Mercury. As an internationally recognised musician, this multi-instrumentalist enjoys invitations to play sell-out performances all over the globe. The USA, UK, Australia, France, Brazil, and Italy have all welcomed him back year after year. However, to simply label Guy Buttery as one of South Africa’s musical phenoms would be an injustice. His international role has surpassed merely performing concerts to foreign audiences. It has evolved into one as an ambassador of South African music, inspiring people across the world with his homegrown style at the very heart of his talent and tenacity. Guy’s distinct unification of South African guitar music is the musical advocate for everything positive and beautiful about the place he calls home.

The duo came together in an official recording for what was their first release in a live improvised concert captured in Cape Town. First heard as an exclusive premiere on NPR's "New Sounds" radio show in New York, the SAMA nominated album “Live in Cape Town” is something of a melting pot of South African and Eastern influences crafted by two of the finest visionaries to emerge from the tip of the continent in decades.

It’s been busy at UWBC as usual!

On Friday, the 28th of July we held our Dormehl Phalane Property Group 2 Bowl Trips competition in glorious winter sunshine. It was another successful day with great bowls and lots of laughter. Thank you so much to Pippa Griffin from DPPG who is not just the sponsor of the day, but also helps to organise and run the competition; she is such a valuable asset to our club and this is definitely one of our most popular competitions. Another round of league took place on Saturday the 5th of August. Our ladies team played at home against Howick, whilst the men played away against Howick. Both teams had an enjoyable afternoon with challenging competition. Unfortunately the ladies only finished with 2 points., however the men came home with 8.5 points under their belts. Well don to all our league players who all gave their very best.

On Sunday, the 6th of August three of our novices represented UWBC at the NIBA Novice Singles. Congratulations to Kevin Palmer and Wendy Smith who both won their sections. Kevin showed some real determination and “stick-to-itivness” in one of his games when he found himself 13-19 down but came back to win 21-20. Wendy worked hard in her games and showed real skill when on a few occasions she would manage to steal the shot when her opponents were holding 3 or 4 shots. Well done to both of our novices, and we wish them luck as they go on to compete in the playoffs on the 10th of September. A very special mention of our third novice who entered her first ever NIBA competition! Sindi Hlongwane played with her heart and soul and really flew our flag high. Whilst she lost her games, she played magnificently and had a close loss of 20-21 in her first game. Her commitment to the game is amazing and it’s wonderful to see her coming along so nicely! Keep an eye out for all three of these players who are showing some great potential!

This weekend the KZN Pairs competition will be held at various clubs in Pietermaritzburg and we wish Lisa Nagel & Wendy Smith the best of luck. They will be playing in section 1A at Maritzburg Bowling Club with 3 games of 18 ends on Saturday and another 2 games on Sunday. It’s sure to be a tough two days but both ladies are looking forward to the challenge and we have no doubt that they will make us proud!
