With the staggering rise of social media scams globally, business executives find themselves increasingly targeted by cybercriminals seeking to exploit their personal and professional lives. WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram have become prime platforms for scammers to lure victims into their web of deception.

Social media scams have witnessed an alarming surge in recent years. In South Africa and around the world, cybercriminals are exploiting the widespread use of social media platforms to perpetrate their illicit activities. While the most common forms of social media scams involve phishing, fake profiles, and financial fraud, there is a more targeted and insidious threat lurking for high-level business executives.

Dean Vorster, Chief Technology Officer at Zinia, a well-established IT technology group that specialises in serving the corporate sector, explains: “Cybercriminals have adapted their strategies to focus on executives and high-level managers. Their primary objective is to obtain private photos or sensitive information that can be used for extortion and harassment. The modus operandi involves identifying key targets on social media, following them, hacking their accounts to access compromising content, and subsequently launching a targeted harassment campaign with the aim of extracting a ransom.”

The psychology behind their scam
The psychology adopted by these scammers is both manipulative and coercive. They employ tactics that place their victims under immense pressure, employing relentless calls and threats to exploit the natural human response to fear. By leveraging the victim's anxiety and apprehension, they aim to create a heightened state of emotional distress. This strategy is designed to keep the victim off balance, making them more susceptible to the scammer's demands. Threats to expose personal information to colleagues and clients intensify this anxiety, further increasing the victim's vulnerability. In essence, these scammers seek to control their target's emotions, using fear as a potent weapon to achieve their malicious goals.

How to Spot a Fake Account
Scammers will take the time to research and plot their attack. They will look for high profile executives or individuals in a senior position whose career and reputation would be affected by revealing personal photographs or information.

“Recognising the signs of a fake social media account is crucial in protecting yourself from scammers as this is their point of entry where they will begin their attack,” says Vorster.

Here are Vorster’s’ top tips to help you identify fake profiles

Friend Requests and Followers: Be cautious of sudden friend requests or followers from unfamiliar accounts, even if they have followed someone you know, do not accept their requests blindly. Scammers will use these tactics to gain access to your network.

Profile: Check the profile information thoroughly. Fake accounts often have incomplete or inconsistent details. Look for discrepancies in names, locations, and job titles.

Picture: Examine the profile picture closely. Fake accounts frequently use stock photos or stolen images from the internet. Conduct a reverse image search if you suspect foul play.

Activity and Engagement: Fake accounts typically have minimal activity and engagement. Be wary of profiles with a limited number of posts, followers, or connections.

Content Quality: Assess the quality of content shared by the account. Fake profiles often post generic or low-quality content. Look for unusual or inconsistent language use.

Securing Your Social Media Accounts
Vorster says, “Now that you know how scammers operate and how to spot fake accounts, it's essential to take proactive measures to secure your social media presence.”

Here are six tips to help protect yourself and your business:
1. Content: Be discerning about what you share online – photographs that reveal location, location check-ins, and personal opinions – as these all give attackers an understanding of you so that they can build a well thought out and targeted attack.
2. Enable Backup Codes - When creating a social media account, enable the "backup code" option. Store these codes securely, as they can help regain access to your account if it's compromised.
3. Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) - Implement two-factor authentication for your accounts. Utilise authentication apps like Google Authenticator, which provide an extra layer of security by requiring an authentication code for every login.
4. Strengthen Passwords: Ensure your passwords are complex and unique. Avoid using personal information such as your name or birthdate, as these are easy for hackers to guess. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.
5. Regularly Check Login Activity: Periodically review your login activity in the account settings. Look for any unusual devices or locations that may indicate unauthorised access.
6. Privacy Settings: Keep your social media accounts on private, especially if they are for personal use. If you are managing a business page or account, consider separating your personal and professional profiles to maintain your privacy.

From Saturday 14 - Sunday 15 October 2023 in Balgowan, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Peter’s Gate herbal centre will be opened.

The gardens were first established in 2008. Today they offer visitors a chance to explore an interesting collection of medicinal, culinary and ornamental herbs. The garden is roughly a hectare of land and overlooks the Caversham Valley in all its glory. It is a working herb farm and all the plants are utilised in production. Free guided tours will be available for visitors who would like to know more about the plants and their various uses. There is also a nursery on site.

Directions; From the N3 take the Tweedle off ramp and turn towards Lions River. Continue straight into Lidgetton. Keep going 2km outside of Lidgetton. Keep going 2km outisde of Lidgetton, the entrance is right next door to Granny Mouse Country House.

League season has come to an end only three months to Christmas! As usual, the time is flying by and we’ve had another busy week of bowls…

On Wednesday the finals of the men’s club singles competition was played with Barry Fairbrother playing against Colin Burden. That was an interesting final with one of our top leads pitted against one of our most experienced skips. Well done to both gents on a great game, and congratulations to Colin Burden on winning the singles!

On Friday, the 29th of September we had 18 teams playing in our monthly Dormehl Phalane 2 bowl trips. The greens were awash with a rainbow of team colours and everyone had a fantastic time. Thank you to the team at Dormehl Phalane for their sponsorship of meat vouchers from Farm Gate Butchery, as well as to J Leslie Smith & Company for the lovely teas. Saturday, 30th September our gents played their final league match for the season and came away with another 11 points between the 2nd and 3rd league teams. Thank you and well done to all our league players, both men and women who have flown our flag through the season; we’re proud of all of you! On that note, we’re already starting to look ahead towards next year’s league season and our new selections committee are already in the process of planning some grading and training exercises so our next season will surely be a very exciting one!

Saturday also saw Lisa Nagel and Wendy Smith attend their first NIBA squad practice in the form of a Mini Internal Quadrangular between the Veterans, Opens, B Side and Presidents Side. What a fantastic day of bowls and well done to the Vets who won the day by quite a margin… age certainly brings much experience to the game!!

On Sunday, Colin Burden, Kevin Palmer, Koos Marais and Wendy Smith played in the NIBA Mixed Fours competition where they played against Maritzburg West and Howick Bowling Club. They finished 12 – 20 down against West but had a much closer game against Howick to end on 10 – 15. Well done lady and gents on a great day of bowls.

A new competition which we will be hosting on Wednesday, 25th of October will be the Amberglades Sizzling 60’s 2 Bowl Trips, and each team must have at least two players who are at least 60. From Saturday 30th September 2023 – Sunday 1st October 2023, the Endebeni Forest will be open. Endebeni Forest is beautiful at any time but spectacular in the spring and breathtaking in autumn when the leaves change colour. It is a traditional English park garden, 24- hectares in size, well-established and filled with abundant plants and trees like azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, magnolias, Chinese and Japanese maples, pin oaks, flowering cherries, liquidambars, swamp cypress, iris, snowflakes, bluebells and berberis to name but a few. There is an eleven-hole, six green mashie golf course, close to the water lily-filled lake. The reflections in the water from the surrounding natural bush and hills are sublime.

Organisers of the aQuellé Midmar Mile have announced that Early Bird entries for the iconic race open today, 27 September 2023.

Celebrating its 51st edition in 2024, the aQuellé Midmar Mile will return to the famous KwaZulu-Natal dam from 8-11 February where thousands of swimmers of all ages and abilities will take to the water for another world-class event.

As in previous years, the first two days will be dedicated to those swimmers raising money for charity in the 8 and 16-mile events. An incredible total of R4 million was raised for a variety of official race charities in 2023.

The main race days will be 10 and 11 February 2024, with the elite swimmers diving into action on the 11th. Last year’s 50th anniversary event saw Dutch world 10km champion Sharon van Rouwendaal claiming the elite women’s title while Durban star Connor Buck took a second straight men’s crown.

Entries are now open on the event website (www.midmarmile.co.za) and will cost R295 per swimmer for an Early Bird entry into events 2-8 which take place on both Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th of February 2024. These events include: Company Relay Teams, Non-Company Relay Teams, Family Relay Teams, Girls 13 years and under & Women 31 years and older, Boys 13 years and under & Men 31 years and older, Girls/Women 14 years to 30 years, and Boys/Men 14 years to 30 years.

Early Bird Entries for Event 1 which takes place on Saturday the 10th of February will cost R350 per swimmer. These events include: Disabled, Pope-Ellis Ironman/Ironwoman, Pope-Ellis Comrades Biathlon, Pope-Ellis Dusi Biathlon and the 71 years and older swims.

As the world's largest open water swimming event, the aQuellé Midmar Mile attracts thousands of competitors each year. Last year’s total exceeded 10,000 swims across the dam.

Race Director Wayne Riddin said preparations are well underway for next year’s event. “The aQuellé Midmar Mile really is one of the most exciting and well-attended open water races in the world,” he said.

“It’s a must-do activity for anyone wanting to experience such a world-class occasion, and we pride ourselves on the inclusivity of this event: elite swimmers in the same body of water with up-and-coming athletes, schoolchildren, Olympic medallists, beginner racers, disabled swimmers, veterans and all sorts of swimming fans. It really is an event for everybody.”

The first of the aQuellé Midmar Mile seeding events will take place at Prime View Adventure & Leisure, Olifantsfontein, Midrand on Saturday, 4 November and Sunday, 5 November 2023. Entries for this event, and the following seeding events, can be made online.

DFMI Business Lab Participants Announcement

After receiving a record number of applications for the third edition of the DFMI Business Lab, the Durban FilmMart Institute is pleased to announce 35 participants from 22 countries across the continent.

The selected participants will undergo a 12-week online business development programme aimed at nurturing and empowering producers with the necessary skills to effectively engage in a global market.

“The Lab is now in its third year. We would like to thank DW Akademie for their continued investment into capacity-building on the African continent,” says Magdalene Reddy, director of DFMI. “In addition to providing filmmakers with the expertise to expand their film career, the lab has created a sense of community between the producers inviting them into a peer-to-peer support system where they are free to share opportunities and learnings as they engage in the film industry.”

The Lab will focus on modules such as Financial management, Business management, Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law, Distribution, and coproduction led by film and creative industry professionals from Burkina Faso, Canada, France, Kenya, South Africa, and the USA.

Restoring Springs, Reviving Communities

WWF's partnerships have yielded a wide range of accomplishments to safeguard the natural systems vital for clean drinking water, food production, fisheries, and ecosystem health. Despite challenges such as a growing population, aging infrastructure, and increasing industrial demands that threaten our ecosystems, WWF tirelessly works to protect our land, wildlife, and vital water sources.

One noteworthy initiative is the focus on natural springs in the Drakensberg areas of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, where communities struggle to access clean water due to inadequate municipal infrastructure and the impact of invasive alien trees. By bringing together a range of donors and working with communities and partners, WWF has helped secure 44 natural springs in the grasslands of the Eastern Cape and has expanded this work to the Enkangala Drakensberg Water Source Area.

In another part of the country—the Kogelberg region of the Western Cape—WWF has built up a deep relationship with small-scale fishers over many years. One aspect of this work has been to upskill young people in the community as Marine Coastal and Community Monitors, enabling some to move on to other nature-based job opportunities.

On the wildlife front, WWF’s Black Rhino Range Expansion Project is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, having worked tirelessly over the last two decades to grow the populations of this critically endangered species in partnership with landowners and communities. WWF’s Land and Biodiversity program have also added extensively to the country’s network of national parks and other protected areas.

These are all examples of WWF’s work that tie in with the Believe in Better campaign, encapsulating the spirit of hope and collaboration that defines WWF’s dedication to a sustainable tomorrow. While it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, behind the daunting troubles that face the environment, the economy, and our society, there is a beacon of hope that shines brightly. That’s the power of unity, collective action, and positive change.

As part of our outreach work, needy families who are battling with food security are identified by our staff members.These families,who are part of the Funda Nenja community, are given food supplies for both themselves and their dogs when funding permits.

Human basic needs are no different to animal basic needs and our staff on the ground educate the community and emphasize the importance of meeting both needs.

We were in Welbedacht township near Chatsworth again this weekend doing a dog steri clinic for Stray Paws South Africa. Thank you to Shabnam for fetching and returning most of the dogs that were sterilised, she does an amazing job in the area where there is such a need. Thanks also to all the volunteers and Sherwin for coming to help us on Sunday.

We did 28 dogs, 16 females and 12 males. Dr Lee also amputated a very swollen, sore toe, as well as saving the life of a very large female dog who had a torn uterus and a dead puppy inside. It seems overwhelming sometimes and you wonder if we are making a difference, but certainly for these dogs it has made a huge difference.

All dogs are vaccinated against rabies too.

The Jackal pups have been developing well and have progressed to drinking milk from a bowl. They have also been introduced to meat and have become quite adventurous with lessened dependency on their den. This is the sign for us that they are ready to begin exploring an outdoor enclosure.

The Jackal pups have gained much confidence since their admission and are excitedly leaving their den to explore their simulated environment in the clinic as pictured here top.

The Waterford Hall Open Gardens will be opened from Saturday 14th – Sunday 15th October 2023.

Comfortably nestled on the side of a hill, Waterford Hall is an intriguing home that looks out on a borrowed vista of trees and water. This sets the tone for the beautifully planted garden around the house. Entrance is via a dual stairway, flanked on either side by roses and old-fashioned perennials. The path leads to the Chinese pavilion – always a favourite – and on to the white garden at the rear of the house. Here a combination of white flowers and roses leading to a domed gazebo, add additional delight.

Directions:
Travel through the main road in Howick and take the Klarkloof Road. Pass the Amber Valley, Amber Ridge entrances and after passing a large dam on the left, take the next road left. Waterford Hall is signed posted.

Blinkwater Trails – Open Day

The Blinkwater Trails Management team wishes to welcome all interested parties to join us for an ‘Open Day Walk’ from Douglas Smith Cottage on Saturday 21st October (weather permitting). There will be a gentle 5km walk and a more adventurous 12km walk.

The 5km walk will be an out and back route from the cottage, taking in stops along the way to absorb some of the delights of this area. It will be suitable for anyone with basic walking fitness and should take a couple of hours at a leisurely pace.

The 12km walk is geared for the fitter walker, starting with a hefty climb up the Old Wagon Track from Douglas Smith Cottage and onto the grasslands, with spectacular three-sixty degree views across Albert Falls and the Karkloof, before taking a steep descent through the indigenous forest and back to the starting point. It is a rewarding loop with plenty to see along the way and is expected to take four to five hours to complete.

Douglas Smith Cottage is best accessed from New Hanover and is about a twenty-minute drive from there on district and forestry roads. Due to limited space and facilities, those interested in attending the open day must book their spot by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. Bring your friends, your walking shoes, sunscreen and a picnic basket (to enjoy back at the cottage after the walk) and come and discover a hidden gem nestled in the Karkloof. Tea/coffee will be available before the start and all participants will receive a boerie roll and cool drink when they return to Dougla Smith Cottage. The cost is R100 for adults and R50 for children U12. Registration opens at 7am and the walks will start at 8am.

Memorise sounds and match them up in this fun game that teaches children how to listen attentively, identify, differentiate, memorise and associate sounds.

Roll the colour dice and pick up a sound cube from the correct coloured circle, shake it to hear its sound, then try select a cube with a matching sound. If you pick up a matching cube, those cubes become yours. The person with the most cubes at the end of the game wins. Make sure to pay attention to your opponents picks to remember what sounds can be found where.

A brilliant game to help develop memory in an exciting way, this game is fantastic fun for both young and old.

Today we took delivery of our 3rd and biggest Honeysucker, it is a brand new FUSO 8 ton.
