An early and chilly morning greeted runners at the Mandela Capture site just past Howick on Saturday 29August. Participants filtered through registration as the orange moon disappeared from sight and the sunlight started to filter through. The race kicked off at 6:30am with just fewer than 250 participants passing through the start banner. A beautifully cut trail and farm roads awaited them as they explored the majestic surroundings in the various distances that had been marked out.

The 4km trail saw some phenomenal young talent coming through in both the men's (boys) and ladies (girls) categories. Young Luke Newlands (9) showed off his talents as he came in first, followed by Willam Bohnen and Siyabusa Msomi came in third. In the ladies 4km Kim Wiggett topped the podium followed by Dawn Reed and another young talent Palesa Sethlako (7) came in third.

An error in the mapping of the 8km course meant runners got a bit more than they had bargained for in terms of distance, but in in the spirit of Madiba, most runners took the "triumph over adversity" mantra to heart and were understanding. There was some very impressive running done in this race, especially factoring in the few extra km's. In the men's Anele Dlamini flew in to take the top position, followed by Sanele Maphumelo and then Mdu Zondi came in at third. In the ladies race, Alice Findlay took the top spot, with Diana Rietz coming in behind her and Kate Quin taking third position.

The 15km race saw some incredible talent fly through the course in both the men and ladies races. The competition was intense as runners competed for the R10 000 top spot prize. In the men's race, Givemore Mudzinganyama managed to get in just ahead of Edwin Sesipi who had Prodigal Khumalo hot on his heels. In the ladies, Poppy Mlambo managed to pull into the finish just before Andronica Mogotla who was followed by Su Don-Wauchope.

The whole weekend of events is a very special one, celebrating the indominatable spirit and legacy of an incredible man who played such a pivotal role in our country. The trail run saw participants having to dig deep and display some of their own inner Madiba spirit of perseverance and determination.

On Saturday, 22 August, Howick High School held its annual inter-house athletics sports day, one of the highlights of the sporting calendar.

The spirit of the day was fantastic and once again it was a very festive event with admirable participation even from non-athletes. Thank you to all pupils who helped their house by participating and earning points and to the parents who competed in the tug-of-war and relay events.

A total of 15 records were broken this year. The junior champions were Garret Frier (Oatlands) and Jamie Tegg (Oatlands) with the senior champions being Sam Olivier (Shafton) and Nicole de Klerk (Shafton). The spirit cup was awarded to Everdon and the winning house was Oatlands.

Mixed breeds, mutts and township specials will proudly strut their stuff at the 13th uMngeni SPCA / Hill's Township Dog Show, at Howick West Soccer Stadium, KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday 11 October.

This is South Africa's oldest 'township dog show' and hundreds of dogs are expected to compete for top honours. Breed is irrelevant, the judges will be looking for good health, friendly behaviour and a special bond with the owner. All shapes, sizes and breed combinations can enter, although the show is exclusively for dogs from local communities. Every entrant will attend an on-site veterinary clinic and be de-wormed, dipped and vaccinated against rabies before entering the show ring.

Gates open at 9:00am. Entry is free, although donations to the SPCA will be welcome. Every entrant will be given a new collar, lead, bowl and blanket. Prizes include kennels, certificates, rosettes and Hill's, the most trusted pet food brand in South Africa. The 6th annual Midlands Literary Festival takes place over the weekend of 21–23 August 2015.

It brings together a wonderful concoction of some of the country's top writers. But this year we're planning to stretch the geographical boundaries of the festival to include a grand opening night at Ike's Bookshop in Durban before switching to the primary and traditional Midlands venue at Howick for the rest of the weekend.

Durban does not really have a literary festival – with the emphasis on "festival" – that captures the imagination, which is why we're hosting an evening at probably the greatest bookshop in all of South Africa: Ike's in trendy Florida Road.

The theme for the evening is "Alice in Wonderland". Bibliophiles are encouraged to come dressed as the Mad Hatter or one of the characters from this perennial classic, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

One of the most colourful characters on the literary scene, Ashwin Desai, should bring the house down with a talk entitled "Alice in Nkandlaland".

Other speakers for the night are Carol Campbell, with Esther's House, her follow-up novel to My children have faces (originally published in Afrikaans as Karretjiemense). Carol scored a major coup this year with the filming rights to both her books being bought.

Acclaimed Indian photographer Ranjith Kally will talk on his recent photographic book with a most beautiful title, Memory Against Forgetting.

And I just could not resist inviting Priya Dala to talk about her debut novel, What about Meera?, much of which was penned on the balcony of Ike's Bookshop.

Rounding off what should be a thoroughly enjoyable evening is a book you must read before you die: Vernon Head's The Search for the Rarest Bird in the World.

The next morning writers and festivalgoers should wake up with a somewhat heavy head for the opening day at Yellowwood Café just outside Howick. (An aside: If you arrive early, be sure to visit the Karkloof Farmers Market just up the road from Yellowwood.)

There will be a tinge of sadness to this year's event: it will be the first festival in its six-year existence at which Ian Player will not be present. People who know me know I seldom invite the same speakers every year, but in Dr Player's case, I sensed his greatness and his diminishing years.

Thus, to celebrate the life of this great man, Roger de la Harpe will present what will be the inaugural Ian Player Memorial Lecture at the festival as he speaks about his magnificent new book, African Icons.

Among other highlights will be Chris Nicholson and Mike Hickson on their book about the first multiracial cricket club in South Africa, the Aurora Cricket Club in Pietermaritzburg; Mary Kleinenberg on her book about the Black Sash of KZN, which has just shot on to the bestseller list; and Zuleikha Mayat, the lady behind that classic, Indian Delights, who will talk on her lyrical letter correspondence with Ahmed Kathrada as well as her latest travel memoir.

And then there's Vernon Head with his masterpiece on birds; Robert "Doc" Caldwell and Tod Collins's fascinating talks and Ashwin Desai about Gandhi. (His book might just win the 2016 Alan Paton Prize, and maybe we can then persuade those folk from that Sunday paper to get their geography right and award the Paton Prize in Paton country next year!)

Not discounting very young up-and-coming writers the programme also includes Emily Burger, a Pietermaritzburg schoolgirl, whose debut novel, Thieves of Greatness, has just appeared.

And there will be light music to add to the festive Midlands atmosphere, mainly in the form of in-between piano sprinklings.

When it comes to sales, your customers have all the answers. When it comes to increasing sales, many businesses look to their marketing to bring in more leads. That they may have enough leads, but their sales process is not converting these leads into paying customers, is often overlooked. Your conversion rate is the percentage of leads that actually buy from you, and it is an often- ignored measurement of successful sales. So how do we increase our conversion rates?

Have you ever answered a question with a question? Would that be making a difference to your conversion rate? The answer to the latter is most definitely yes! Asking questions increases your conversion rate and ensures that the sale becomes their idea and not yours.

Asking questions also means active listening. You can ask questions about your customer's work, business, children or hobbies but make sure that you are listening with sincere interest. It may even be helpful to note down some of the answers – such as the names of their children and their interests - for future communication. By asking questions and listening, you are building rapport and attaching importance to the conversation.

Also, by asking questions you are remaining in control of the conversation. Once you find yourself doing all the talking you are no longer in control. Just remember that the person asking questions sets the direction for the conversation. If the customer is dominating the conversation by asking you questions make sure you answer the question with a question. However, try to vary the questions that you ask. You may remember from looking after your own children or babysitting that being asked 'but why?' over and over again tends to get a little monotonous.

Questions can guide consumer interest, discover a need and give accurate information. There are two commonly known types of questioning – open-ended and closed questions.

Open-ended questions are an excellent way to ensure customer involvement in the conversation and are key to identifying what they need as well as a lot about themselves. You can use open-ended questions to build rapport, to find a need, to discover a customer problem and find the right solution. In journalism there are six key questions used in the interviewing process, which is equally useful in sales – who, what, where, when, why and how.

Here are a few examples of open-ended questions which are very useful:
• Who are you buying the product/service for?
• How often would you use the product/service?
• What features were you looking for in this product/service?

This type of questioning yields a lot of valuable information from your customer and helps you determine which product/service is uniquely suited to them.

Closed questions tend to get one-word answers 'yes' or 'no'. They can be used to gather information quickly – like a checklist. Using closed questions can also confirm a buying detail and help confirm the sale.

By using questions you are: encouraging the customer to communicate; building rapport; establishing their needs; directing the conversation; diffusing tension; and inviting discussion.

Learning the art of questioning and listening is the key to increasing your conversion rate and well on the way to creating a continuing customer relationship.

Wattle trees have choked some stretches of the Umgeni, and threaten the demise of a fine trout stream. Wattles contribute tannins, fall into the river, shade the water, and due to the barren nature of the ground beneath them, contribute significantly to siltation. Siltation stops trout from breeding, and wattle trees also suck huge amounts of water from the system, exacerbating low winter flows.

'The Fly-fishing Community are Environmentally Conscious for many reasons. Firstly because it is the environment which attracts us out there, secondly because, naturally, it's the right thing to do and thirdly, without sustainable waters, we won't have sustainable fishing for ourselves and the generations to come. At this stage we have a conservative attendance estimate of a minimum of 40 people.' Said Dave Prentice.

Join the Umgeni River clean-up no 3:
On 12th September 2015 members and non-members alike are encouraged to meet us at the Rotunda in Hilton to share lifts or get directions to Brigadoon farm. We will then travel up in convoy and spend the day tackling wattles that line the banks of parts of this important river.

This year we have considerable support from the WWF, prominent local conservationists, and the landowner. We will have contractors working with us and tractors to pull fallen trees from the river. So this one promises to be particularly productive, and we are excited at the prospects of improving even more stretches of river, so that members can return and enjoy the Trout fishing, which was particularly good in the latter part of last summer.

Bring a friend, a saw, some rope, a chainsaw if you can operate it safely, some sandwiches, and plenty to drink.

We plan to split into 2 groups: one to do a thorough job on a short stretch of river, to completely restore it, and another to move upstream at speed cutting the maximum number of smaller stems.

At the recent District SALGA Games held in Dundee, where 11 Municipalities from across KZN were represented, Howick Prep had 10 pupils selected to represent Umgungundlovu Municipality in tennis. They performed outstandingly and were place 2nd at the end of the week. Howick Prep School isiZulu teacher, Mrs Thandeni Zondi, who was appointed Tournament Manager of the Umgungundlovu District Dance team also needs to be congratulated on Umgungundlovu winning the Dance category at the District SALGA Games.

What a wonderfully busy week this has been with a tabs in competition on Wednesday and an all day tournament on Sunday.

The competition on Wednesday was sponsored by Halfway Toyota Howick and prizes were presented to the winners and the runners up by Margie Wheelwright. The worthy winners were Ray Bester, Ted Smith and Colin Joosten. The runners up were Tony Gage, Alan Pienaar and Pat Ciro.

Sunday's tournament was played in excellent weather and teams from various clubs participated and thoroughly enjoyed the day which was sponsored by J Leslie Smith & Co Inc. The overall winners were John Beeching, Harry Pratt and Allan Peech of Collegians. Second prize went to Clive Wills, Kevin Wylie and Doug Butler of Lynwood and third prize went to Barry Bedworth, Clark Logan and Jo Boonzaier of Umgeni Waterfall. The Plate event was won by Dave Truscott, Lionel Keeling and Barry Fairbrother of Umgeni Waterfall . 1st Howick Cubs and Scouts are proud to once again host the annual Howick Highlander! This year is a special year as we celebrate our 21st event making the Howick Highlander one of the oldest mountain biking events in the country! Over the years this event has evolved into a truly unique experience which caters for the whole family. On offer are trail runs and mountain bike rides which will take you on routes through the beautiful Umgeni Valley and Everdon Estate - normally not accessible to the public. The runs and rides are not timed allowing you to soak up the views at your leisure. Sunday, the 30th August 2015 from 7am at the Karkloof Farmers Market is the place to be.

Proceeds from the event go towards subsidising outdoor activities such as camps, outings and events for the 1st Howick Cubs & Scouts. Run entirely by volunteers, the Howick Group has over the years provided invaluable services to the youth of the area. In today's chaotic world we believe that it is absolutely critical that the youth engage with environmental, conservation and social responsibility programs. Cubs and Scouts endeavour to promote a range of competencies in our youth with a special focus on leadership.

For the first time in 2015, the Howick Highlander will be partnering with Ethembeni HIV, AIDS and TB Ministry. Bikes in need of repair will be restored and used by vulnerable families. If you have a bike or any cycling accessories to donate, please contact Andrew Kirby on 083 228 2252.

Sister Peg saves the day!

Sister Peg has long contributed to the Midlands community through her excellent work in caring for and educating under privileged children in the area. In 2000, when the Highlander race had a handful of participants the race looked like it may need to be cancelled as a result of a lack of funding and resources to keep it running. Sister Peg decided this was not going to happen and promptly raised $1000 from friends and family to ensure the Highlander lived on! This has allowed the Highlander to evolve into the Family Adventure Weekend that it has become today. In 2008, the Highlander race donated a portion of the money raised to Sister Peg as thanks for her support over the years – and to allow her to continue the selfless, invaluable work that she does in the Midlands community! Thanks Sister Peg and thanks to all the Highlander participants over the years!
