The MiWay Midlands Ultra Triathlon, set to take place at Midmar Dam on the 27th November is set for an absolute cracker of an event. A host of the country's top triathlon stars have entered with the pace at the front expected to be extremely hot as the triathletes via for the R90 000 prize purse.

Leading the charge will be the SA Long Course Triathlon Champion, Matt Trautman. Trautman won this title convincingly at the MiWay Ultra event that took place at the same venue in March of this year. A diagnosed stress fracture shortly thereafter curtailed Trautman’s season forcing him to miss the World Ironman Championships in Kona that took place in October. His competitors can expect him to be fresh and hungry to get back into the action and one would be hard pressed not to back him for another win come Sunday 27th November.

He will not have it all plain sailing as a host of athletes will try and un-settle him and hope that his comeback is still short of his best performance. Leading the charge is a perennial top 3 at the Ultra Series, Clinton Gravett. Gravett has a good swim, a solid bike and a powerful run as part of his armoury and he will no doubts be there or thereabouts throughout the 113km distance. Travis Johnston is another athlete in top form having won the MiWay Cape Ultra in September. He will be a hard man to beat and will definitely be going after Trautman on the bike and run sections. Kent Horner and Rudolf Naude are another two top contenders who will fight for the top podium spots on the day

Amongst the ladies, the defending champion from the March event, Anna Watkinson is back and she looks to be the class of the field as she contests another Midlands Ultra race that will see athletes tackle an extremely demanding bike course. Watkinson is a powerhouse on the bike and the course is well suited to her strengths. A solid run from her normally backs up the performance on the bike so any lady wishing to challenger her will have to be close by on the bike and hope that she fades away on the run. Magda Niewoud and Corinne Berg will be pushing her all the way as they hope to un-seat Watkinson who has had a stellar season on the international racing circuit. Another KZN local, Teneal Featherby will also be looking at that top 3 finish slot which should make for a very tight and interesting ladies event.

Apart from the Ultra Event, the MiWay Midlands Ultra also hosts a shorter sprint distance event in conjunction with the main event. This sprint event has proved to be extremely popular with atleast 500 athletes racing for wins over the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run course. The Sprint Distance event is normally the domain for the top juniors in the country to dominate and we can expect from furious racing amongst these spring chickens as they normally race hard from the gun start. Local Junior and current SA Junior Triathlon Champion Ben De La Porte should be in the mix as well the two Marquiss brothers and Finn Elliot with a number of other athletes travelling from Gauteng and the Western Cape also expected to be in the mix. Amongst the ladies, local Tegan Gore and Amber Schlebusch will be looking to keep the title at home but will be hard pressed to stay in front come the end of the 5km run discipline.

Racing gets underway at 7am with the Sprint Athletes off first followed shortly thereafter by the Ultra athletes. A full day’s entertainment is guaranteed with an expo area and hospitality area set to keep the crowns entertained while the athletes do their thing.

Pond Life was the theme of the week and we took our Gr R and RR children to explore pond life at a local dam.
The children had input from a very knowledgeable resident Grandpa. They went armed with a Pond Life manual to help them identify some of the little creatures they saw.
They had great fun ticking off in their books as well as catching water bugs with their nets, buckets and rods. They walked to a hide to look out over the dam and listened to a story 'The Frog on the Log'.
After the busy morning they each munched a frog themed cupcake made by Faith's Kitchen. This was a most beneficial and educational outing.

The Tabs in competition sponsored by Halfway Toyota Howick due to be held on Wednesday, 12 October was postponed due to poor weather. While rain is most welcome it is not conducive to spending time on a bowling green. The combination of rain and cold winds made being outdoors rather unpleasant. This competition will now take place on Wednesday, 19 October.

In contrast, league matches were played on Saturday in extreme heat with temperatures reaching a high of 37 deg C. Sympathies are extended to all players who were overcome by the heat and had to withdraw from their respective matches.

Lock-up and go advice for the upcoming festive season
The last thing you want is a positive break-in while you are away on holiday. Here are a few things you can do before leaving for the holidays.
1. Alert your alarm company
Just switching on your alarm and jumping into your car is not sufficient. First ensure that your alarm is working, and then let your alarm company know that you will be away.

2. Proactive activity
Try to ensure that there is some activity in and around your home. Whether you have a friend or family member making regular “pop-by” visits to feed your pet or have someone staying the night. The little bit of activity will keep criminals at bay. You can also have a light, TV or radio on a timer to go on and off periodically during the night – giving the impression that there is someone home.

3. Social media
Don’t advertise your travel plans on any social media; rather share the details and upload photo’s when you get back.

4. A presence
Arrange for someone to be around if you have a weekly garden or pool service coming by.

5. Hold your post/mail
One of the most noticeable signs that there is no one at home is a pile of post and newspapers in the letterbox at the end of your driveway. Consider hiring a post box, and tell the media company to put a hold on your daily newspaper. Failing that, get someone to collect your post and newspaper on a daily basis.

6. Lighting and fencing
Ensure that outside lights are also on a day-light timer and that the foliage is cleared along your fence line.

The Funday planned for this past Sunday was enjoyed by 22 folk who braved the intermittent rain showers. It was wonderful to have visitors among whom was Margie Wheelwright of HalfwayToyota Howick. We were happy to have them join us and hope they enjoyed the experience. Novelty games were played with each player recording his/her own score. The three players with the highest points were Barry Bedworth, Lisa Nagel and Kitty Conradie who had the pick of the prizes. JG Afrika (Pty) Ltd will be holding its 5th annual e-Waste Collection in partnership with Liberty Midlands Mall and SmartMatta on 24 November 2016.

Electronic Waste or e-waste constitutes any unwanted electrical or electronic equipment (powered by either batteries or electricity) such as computers, TVs, VCRs & DVD players, consumer electronics, kettles, printers, fax machines, cell phones, toasters, microwares and / or direct parts thereof.

Electric and electronic goods contain numerous chemical elements and heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium. As a result, any resulting e-waste can be hazardous and toxic, causing serious health and environmental pollution problems if not handled responsibly. Hazardous components from mismanaged e-waste can contaminate soil and water and pollute the air with toxic fumes if burnt. In addition, e-waste contains valuable materials that can be recovered through recycling.

e-Waste is the fastest growing waste stream in South Africa as old and redundant items are generated due to the rapid advance of new technology. To ensure a limited influence of this burgeoning impact on the environment, the responsible management of e-waste is required. To this end, the e-waste collection day aims to provide an opportunity for the general public to ensure that their e-waste gets handled in a responsible manner.

All e-waste received on the day will be either repaired, or dismantled and safely disposed. The handling of these items will take place in accordance with the integrated waste management principles and available environmental best practices.

Items which WILL NOT be accepted on the day, are: fluorescent lights and batteries.

The Tabs in competition sponsored by J Leslie Smith and The Health Nut was won by Brian Ellison, Dave Riall, Lisa Nagel and Pat Bennett. The runners-up were Dudley Ventress, Jeannette Cain, Pat Ciro and Howard Thomas.

The final league matches for this year have been played. Sadly, our teams did not fare too well. We wish them good bowling when league recommences next year.

Sunday, 06 November: Everyone, bowlers and non-bowlers, are welcome to join us for a FUN DAY and Bring ‘n Braai at Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club (opposite the Umgeni Hospital). Start time 10am. Dress Code: Casual. Trainers or barefoot. Come along with your meat and salads or whatever you wish to eat and have some fun. Bowls are available for use on the day. Cost: Sponsors Free, Members: R10, Teenagers R15, Visitors R 25.

Friday, 11 November: Club event sponsored by Warwick Wealth. 13h00 start. Generous Prizes on offer. Members please place your name on the list in the clubhouse to facilitate catering.
