The Texas-based oil exploration company Rhino Resources has cut back on the scale of its proposed oil and gas exploration bid in KZN after a major public backlash. The company’s local subsidiary, Rhino Oil and Gas Exploration, lodged an exploration application early last year covering a massive 1 500 000ha chunk of the province and nearly 10 000 farms. Now the scale of its exploration bid has been reduced to 850 000 ha and about 6 700 properties in central KZN. Environmental consultants acting for the company acknowledged that there had been “extremely strong” and almost unanimous public opposition to the exploration plan, which could ultimately involve hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”). The public have now been invited to comment on the draft environmental impact studies before October 14. Six public feedback meetings have been scheduled in Richmond, Colenso, Mooi River, Howick, Greytown and Dundee from October 3 to 7. Congratulations to Robert Lawrence (Midlands U/12A Captain), Tylan Adam (Midlands U/13 squad), Bonga Phiri (Midlands U/13 Squad), Ethan March (Northern Districts), Daniel Sookdhew (Northern Districts), Stephen Whitwell (Northern Districts) and Joshua Moller (Northern Districts). Howick Prep School 1st team coach, Mr Ashley Sokaloo, was also appointed as an Inland U/13 Cricket selector and as one of the Inland U/13 Cricket coaches.

Spring Madness was celebrated on Tuesday, 06 September when an eclectic mix of bowlers took part in a fun morning of varied styles of bowling organised by John Withers. This was followed by a most enjoyable lunch at Ray’s Café.

On Saturday, 10 September the first round of the club’s drawn mixed trips competition was played in the mist and the rain. Now this could be termed following in the footsteps of the English who, due to the short outdoor bowling season, play in all kinds of weather if they do not wish to be scratched from the competitions. Well done to everyone who turned up to play on Saturday.

After bowls we bid farewell to Petra Stubbs who has been a member of Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club since 1989. She leaves Howick to move closer to her family in the fair Cape. We wish Petra every happiness in her new home and many enjoyable hours watching whales and sea spray from the sea shore.

On 28th August, the Midlands Hiking Club hosted a beginners hike through Boughton. Thanks to hike leader, Katy Hart for providing the opportunity to do a very manageable hike. There was quite a lot of variety in terms of hills, cool shaded walks, open forestry tracks and the very pleasant walk through a leaf covered trail. the hike covered a very respectable distance of 7.2 km, all of this within the borough of Pietermaritzburg.

On the 6th of September Howick High School held their annual Matric Art Exhibition. Matric students are required to put up retrospective exhibitions showing their work over the past 3 years. Many of the students could be justly proud of the standard of work they exhibited. As is our tradition pupils have the opportunity to auction their artworks on the night in a silent auction. The auction was well supported with friends and family bidding against each other for their favourite artworks. The top bid this year was for a drawing by Patrick Ferguson which sold for R300.00 and Patrick was also the top earner of the night bringing in R1100. The silent auction raised a total of R5020 for the Art Department and its Artists. A number of pieces have been selected for display in the Matric Art Exhibition at the Tatham Gallery in 2017.

Mpophomeni Community Garden is a must see for all veggie lovers.

The vibrant colours and aromas of the garden, coupled with the dynamic gardening queen, Ntomenthle , her fountain of knowledge and the festive Mpophomeni atmosphere provided a worthwhile visit to this lively Community Garden.

The most delicious vetkoek served with a rainbow salad and bom bom beans on sale every 2nd Friday of the month, are a treat not to be missed. Market day is every 3rd Friday of the month,where the public can buy beautiful organic vegetables and seedlings and support the local community.

The Howick High Eco Club and Recycling Managers were proud to install a new set of recycling bins in their quads this term. We were able to purchase these bins with the Makro voucher that the school received from Wildlands in association with Nedbank and the Clothes for Life Campaign. We are grateful to Wildlands for sponsoring the stickers to label these bins.

Howick High has been involved with recycling for 8 years now and we plan to continue growing the recycling system in our school in order to benefit both the environment and our school grounds.

With the rebates received from Wildlands for the recycled waste that we collect, our Eco Club has been able to take part in various water-wise projects.

The school is currently involved in a grey water challenge where each class is encouraged to bring grey water from home every “Water Wednesday”. The Eco Club have been using this grey water to water the gardens around the school grounds, as well as the cricket pitch. This has turned out to be very successful and is saving huge amounts of water.

At the inter-school athletics meeting held in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday 03 August Howick Prep School was placed 1st followed by Laddsworth, Athlone, Northern Park, Gert Maritz and Richmond. At the Pelham Athletics meeting a week earlier, Howick Prep School girls team was also placed 1st ahead of Pelham, TWC ‘A’, Laddsworth, Athlone and Scottsville.

MommyHeart is the fulfilment of a dream of two friends committed to and passionate about antenatal education and postnatal support. We are both registered nurses and midwives, and in addition to this we are both mums, and have experienced fairly recently, and in an ongoing way, the trials and triumphs of this incredible journey into motherhood.

Our most important goal is to come alongside other mums and mums-to-be, and to provide support and information. We want to see each mum moving forward into this exciting new stage of life with joy and confidence, and with a sense of security in knowing that you are not alone. We know, and hope to instill in you the knowledge, that as a mum you hold in your hands and hearts everything you need for your pregnancy and the early days of your little one’s life.

We offer antenatal education, breastfeeding advice and postnatal support, and try to make this support as accessible as possible for pregnant ladies by offering courses in a number of locations, and providing postnatal support when and where it is most needed through in-hospital and home visits. We want to see mum’s prepared for, and supported through their pregnancies, and into the early weeks and months of their babies lives. We are mums ourselves and we always try to keep it real, as we support you through the ups and downs of mommy-hood!

As we are all aware, the effects for the drought are devastating and far reaching. In an effort to help this terrible situation Howick Pre-Primary School has started a Water Wednesday Project. So what does that mean?

Each Wednesday we encourage the children to bring a bottle of Grey water to school. This ‘dirty’ water is then used to water our school gardens and grass. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to teach our little children the importance of saving water and ways to re-use water. So far this term we have managed to re-use 525L of grey water.
